Recently, U.S. scientists developed a new data transmission technology that uses "terahertz" radio waves to transmit data. This technology allows data transfer speeds of up to 50GB per second, about 100 times higher than the current 500MB per second.

It is learned that at present, the data of a wireless network is mainly transmitted through microwaves, and the wavelength of the terahertz is between microwaves and infra-reds. The frequency of the THzs is higher than that of microwaves and can carry more data.

The researchers conducted a transmission experiment. The experimental results show that the data transmission error rate is 0 when high-definition television programs transmitted using a terahertz system transmit data at a rate of 10 GB per second. When they increase the speed to 50 GB per second, The error rates have risen, but researchers say these are resolved through the current communications network correction system.

Since any sound or data transmission system requires the support of multitasking technology, the goal of transmitting multiple signals over the same channel has been reached. So, the researcher made the waveguide with two pieces of balanced metal and left a slit in the middle of one of them. When terahertz waves carry data through the slit, the signals at different frequencies are differentiated by the angle at which they are emitted.

Mitelman, a professor at the Brown University School of Engineering in the United States, said this is the first time that terahertz has been used to transmit actual data. The success of this experiment shows that THz is expected to become the foundation of wireless network in the future and develop ultra high speed WiFi to meet the increasing demand of users for WiFi access.
