The auto industry’s automatic transmissions in China’s auto industry are all dependent on the embarrassing situation of foreign imports or Chinese-foreign cooperation in borrowing foreign intellectual property rights. The auto automatic gearbox independently developed by Geely was officially launched in the first half of this year, and was successively equipped to various cars currently in production. This is also China's first self-developed, fully automatic transmission with independent intellectual property rights.

The car automatic transmission comes from the Geely Automobile Research Institute and the product has a series of products ranging from 1.3L to 1.6L. The Geely Automobile Research Institute was established in 2000. In the first half of last year, Geely invested 350 million yuan to build the Auto Research Institute to enable the Institute to host Geely’s greater ambitions in its own brands, and invited the former vice president of Daewoo Motors Korea. Former president of the Daewoo Motor Research Institute and former president of the Korea Automobile Engineering Association, Shen Fengji, served as vice president of research and development and dean of the Automotive Research Institute of the company to learn from Korea’s experience in automatic transmission.

Comment: According to the data from the China Gear Professional Association, none of China’s auto transmissions have independent intellectual property rights, and they all rely on imports: In 2001, they imported 480 million U.S. dollars of automatic transmissions for cars. In 2002, they imported 600 million U.S. dollars. It soared to 860 million U.S. dollars in 2003; in 2004, it imported 730 million U.S. dollars only in the first 7 months. Experts predict that if this trend is to be followed, by 2010, China will have to import car transmissions worth several billion yuan. Geely once again took the first step for Chinese automakers. Comprehensive performance of several companies such as Geely, Chery, and Jiangling this year, the Chinese national independent brands were really exciting in 2005.
